The High Court has issued a rule to know why the decision of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) will not be declared illegal because of the increase in electricity prices at wholesale and retail level.
A High Court bench of Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashraful Kamal issued the rule on Sunday on the preliminary hearing of a writ petition.
Convenor of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) filed a writ petition.
Barrister Jurtimoy Barua on behalf of the court petitioned the petition. Deputy attorney general Motahar Hossain Saju was present in the state.
Within four weeks, BERC, Chairman of BERC and Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Mineral Resources were asked to respond to this rule.
On November 23 last year, the BERC announced a price hike of power. Every unit (one-kilowatt hour) of electricity is increased to an average of 35 paisa or 5.3 percent.
